Do better.

From November 25 to December 10, I will be walking for the UN Women Australia’s Safe Everywhere Always campaign. 

From a young age, it was engrained in my mind “don’t do this, don’t do that, don’t go alone, don’t walk in the dark”. I was taught how to defend myself in scary situations that men could put me in. This is the sad reality for women. 

As naive as it sounds, I never thought it would happen to me. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the year, my friend and I were victims of a terrifying sexual assault incident on public transport. 

Incidents like this are embarrassingly and disgustingly common for women. This year alone, 62 women have been killed in Australia as a result of violence against women. 1 in 3 women will experience assault in their lifetime. This is a disgrace. More needs to be done to combat violence against women.

Please continue to advocate for all the women in your lives. Please continue to fight for justice for the women who lost their battle. Safety for women everywhere is non-negotiable.
